Mother and Daughter Critically Injured After Being Struck By Truck

Not everyone uses a vehicle to get around. Many people either have to walk, or they choose to walk as an alternative transportation method to driving. Unfortunately, drivers of motor vehicles often overlook pedestrians even when they are obeying all the rules, like using a designated crosswalk to cross a street. When cars and other vehicles aren’t paying attention it can be bad news for pedestrians.

A young mother and her small child are both still fighting for their lives after they were hit by a semi-truck while they were walking, recently. At the time of this report both the mother and her 2-year-old daughter were still in the hospital being treated for critical injuries. At last report the girl was expected to survive but family members thought she would probably lose her leg to amputation due to the severity of her injuries. The mother was reportedly pushing her daughter in a stroller when they were hit while they were in a crosswalk.

Authorities say the driver of the truck, a 51-year-old man, was cited for failure to reduce speed and for failure to yield to pedestrians in a crosswalk. The truck is registered to a recycling company called Lakeshore Recycling Systems. According to reports, drivers for that company have apparently been involved in 16 collisions in just the last two years. The mother and her daughter were struck head on in this accident and ended up underneath the truck. The mother’s exact condition was not known at the time of this report, but her injuries were life threatening.

If the driver of the truck is found liable for this accident then both he and the company for which he works could be held responsible for the injuries that the victim’s suffered. There were no reports as to whether or not the family of the victims had decided to file a lawsuit against the company and the driver. Anyone in Chicago that is hurt by a careless or negligent driver should consult with a truck accident attorney as soon as possible.
