Separate Lawsuits Seek Damages From Bars After Fatal Crash

Despite the many tragic accidents that continue to occur on a regular basis, time and again, innocent people are hurt or killed because of drunk drivers. Anytime someone gets behind the wheel of a vehicle after he or she has been drinking that person is putting the lives of anyone around him or her in danger. No one should ever have to suffer a serious or fatal injury because someone else makes the choice to drive while intoxicated. However, these kinds of accidents still happen with great regularity.

The family of an Illinois State college student has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the woman who is responsible for his death, as well as two bars that allegedly served her alcoholic beverages on the night of the accident. According to court documents, the family claims that the two bars named in the suit should not have continued serving the woman alcohol during the hours before the accident took place. The woman pleaded guilty to aggravated driving under the influence after she was reportedly going 130 mph when the car she was operating slammed into the other vehicle after running a red light. The family is seeking $50,000 in damages in their lawsuit.

The young man’s family has also filed a wrongful death suit against the woman, as well as a lawsuit against the owner of the vehicle, which she was driving. The lawsuit claims that the owner should have been aware of the women’s history of drug and alcohol abuse and therefore he should not have allowed her to drive his vehicle. Meantime, there were three other people in the car that was struck that all survived the crash. However, they all suffered injuries. So far, one of those passengers has also filed a lawsuit against the two bars in question. She too is seeking $50,000. No one from either bar had commented on the lawsuits at the time of this report.

This is a terrible tragedy with extremely difficult consequences. All of this could have been avoided if the individuals named in the lawsuits would have acted differently.
