Many innocent third-party people end up being the victims of reckless or careless drivers who cause accidents. However, sometimes those victims include people who are actually riding in the same vehicle as the reckless or careless driver. You might wonder if people who choose to ride with a driver who acts recklessly on their own accord can still seek damages if they are hurt. The answer is yes. Anyone who is hurt or killed by a reckless driver could be entitled to receive compensation for his or her injuries, pain and loss.
A woman was recently killed after she was thrown from the vehicle in which she was riding after the driver lost control. According to authorities, the woman died at the scene. The driver of the vehicle, a 33-year-old man from Griffith has been charged with reckless homicide and a judge recently set bail for the man at $350,000. However, the man has not yet appeared in court because he also suffered injuries in the crash to both his head and back. He is still recovering. According to authorities, the man was speeding when he lost control of his truck and slammed into a wall. The truck flipped over onto a bike path.
Authorities say the truck ended up more than 200 feet away from the initial spot where it lost control. The driver is in critical condition, and reports say that he tested positive for opiates in his system as the time of the crash. The driver and the victim had reportedly recently reconnected after originally meeting in high school. They were traveling to see a concert together when the crash occurred. It was not reported if either of them were wearing seatbelts when the crash occurred.
It appears that this man’s actions are directly responsible for this woman’s death. If convicted of the charges then the woman’s family might consider pursuing a lawsuit against this man. Even if he is not convicted, the family could still pursue a wrongful death suit in the accident. While this man is also suffering, it was because of his actions that this woman was killed.
