Imagine walking down the sidewalk minding your own business when suddenly a car comes barreling at you. It’s a scenario that plays out all too often in Chicago or anywhere else. Now imagine sitting inside an office building, or other business establishment when a car comes crashing through the wall and slams into you. While this type of situation doesn’t happen very often, when it does, it can lead to serious injuries, especially to the defenseless person outside of the vehicle.
A woman from Valparaiso was seriously hurt recently, after a vehicle struck her while she was working inside a medical facility. According to reports the woman was airlifted to a nearby hospital but her condition was not known at the time of this report. The woman was trapped under the vehicle inside the building for about 40 minutes after it broke through the entire wall. The injured woman was the only person inside the building when the crash occurred.
According to reports, the man who was operating the vehicle at the time of the accident was allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol. Authorities say the 68-year-old man, who was not injured, appeared to be drunk after the accident. When officers administered a blood alcohol test his blood alcohol level registered over .15 percent, which is much higher than the legal limit of .08 percent. The man has been charged with several crimes, including OWI-causing serious bodily injury and OWI-with a BAC over .15 percent.
It is unfortunate that this woman was hurt; and this situation could have been avoided. When a people decide to drink and drive and they end up injuring someone else they should be held responsible for their actions. Sometimes, that includes facing a lawsuit from the victim(s).
